Testimonials

Working with the GAE allows us to have excellent candidates for the internships during their time with us. The program is designed so the students get a valuable life experience while in Germany and a truly hands-on work experience during their internship. There are numerous benefits for hosting the students, including the work and time they contribute to helping achieve our internal goals.

Melanie Altenkirch, Environmental Science and German Undergraduate at UNC Chapel Hill, GAE intern 2022 with Swagelok Stuttgart:

“In my return to Germany after about 14 years, I have been exploring the transatlantic political and economic connection and my role therein. Insights from my work at Swagelok Stuttgart | B.E.S.T. Fluidsysteme GmbH in the renewable energy industry and the EU’s success in climate health shape my interests and give me hope for the future of global energy… I am excited to share my thoughts this Thursday in a conference with the German American Exchange e.V. concerning the transatlantic connection. I look forward to representing my experiences at my internship at Swagelok Stuttgart, and learning to be a part of global solutions. I am so grateful for this awesome opportunity.

gewerblichen Rechtsschutz in Deutschland, 2022

German Language Skills

While it certainly helps to have strong German language skills, as you are working and living in an environment where German is the language everyone uses, I would say there are more things you take from the experience that allow for people whose German skills are less advanced to excel nonetheless.
The first is that your German skills will improve exponentially while you are there, just because you are fully immersed. In the office, at the grocery store, at a restaurant or even with friends you make – you will be speaking German. The second thing I would say is that the experience in GAE goes far beyond the language component. It is a cultural experience and while language is a part of culture, it is not the only part. There is plenty to learn and enjoy when living and working in Germany, even if you are not a native speaker.
From my year in the program, we had students whose language levels differed and we all still had a wonderful experience. My roommate at the time, who was also in the program had no German background or family and was learning German in school and thrived. We both had the best time regardless of our language levels.
The necessity for German language skills may also vary based on the internship position you are in and how much is expected of you in that regard.

First time abroad?

I think the program provides you with everything you need to succeed. The orientation at the beginning of the program is the introduction to the program and living and working in Germany. Of course, you can always reach out to the program organizers, but what was especially helpful for many of us – especially for those who had not been to Germany before or travelled much – was speaking with each other. We made a group chat very early on, where people could exchange questions and answers and we could rely on each other, as we were all going through the same experience.
While it is true that the program does not handhold people through the exchange, that is almost not necessary. We are all young adults who are entering a professional world where we have to learn to be self-sufficient and I think that is one of the lessons that people can learn from participating in the program. I would also say that it is the German way and part of the cultural exchange; Germans are typically much more independent than Americans are – so this fits in with the cultural experience.

Is the pay enough to live off of?

In the US, many internships that undergraduates take are unpaid volunteer internships. Many of my fellow GAE interns were very excited to be paid and even to have a vacation day or two. So, I think that some students may need additional financial support from either their families or their universities in the form of scholarships, it is an experience that is well worth it.
(I myself saved up money prior, since I studied abroad the semester before I did the program as well, but it’s been a few years now I cannot quite remember if I needed additional financial support from my parents or not. )

The benefits of the program

I truly cannot recommend the program enough to students who are interested in gaining work experience abroad, learning a new language, exploring a new country, or even just trying something new in their career path. The experience itself was incredible and one of the best summers of my life. I made really great friends and memories, including watching the world cup that summer, I got to live in the beautiful Munich, Germany, and got to partake in really cool program-organized events. Some highlights were: during our visit to Berlin, we went inside the Reichstag, visited the German Resistance Memorial Center where General von Stauffenberg was executed. In Munich we got a personalized city tour, a beautiful classical concert at (I think) Schloss Nymphenburg, a tour during our visit to the NS-Dokumentationszentrum (the former Nazi headquarters which is now a museum). Finally, I of course have to mention the German-American Business Day where we were able to hear from transatlantic leaders in business and network with them after panel discussions.
On top of all of the cool opportunities that came with being in the program, my internship solidified what I wanted to do professionally and my involvement in the program prepared me most for what I am doing now. I am currently a graduate student at Georgetown University in the Walsh School of Foreign Service pursuing a Master’s degree in German and European Studies. The transatlantic topics that were discussed during program events and just by nature of my interactions with people I encountered prepared me very well for my Master’s program. I learned the value of networking and listening and learning from others in the field, and I gained a deeper cultural understanding about the transatlantic relationship.
To this day, I am still involved in the GAE through the Transatlantic Conversation Group Podcast and provide mentorship to new and incoming students to the program.
